About Sharon

Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Sharon McCall's artistic journey was shaped by the vibrant cultures that surrounded her. This rich visual heritage laid the groundwork for her artistic evolution, which was further honed by her years of engagement with and collecting 19th-century art. McCall's largely self-taught path is demonstrably informed by the meticulous detail and rich palettes of that era. This influence manifests in her use of playful patterns and color harmonies that dominate her wood panels.

Drawing inspiration from the masterful use of light by Georgia O'Keeffe and the whimsical narratives of Marc Chagall, McCall constructs a visual world that celebrates opulence and the beauty of diverse cultures. Her travels – evident in the evocations of global motifs – inform her artistic vocabulary, adding depth and a sense of lived experience to her oeuvre.

Her compositions imbue the paintings with a sense of energy and dynamism, along with a sense of witty humor that playfully peeks through in unexpected details. McCall's artistic dedication extends beyond her personal explorations. Years spent diligently analyzing art books and studying the works of established masters in world-class museums and galleries have undoubtedly refined her artistic sensibilities.

While Sharon's personal artistic practice began later in life, her deep appreciation for art, honed through years of collecting and study, has translated into a vibrant and evocative visual language. This unique confluence of experience manifests in a style that defies categorization; it results in a visual language entirely her own, a refreshing departure from the contemporary artistic landscape where echoes and derivatives often prevail.

ACT II

I am so fortunate to be embarking on this journey with my dear friend Victoria as our second act in life.  "Act II" as we call ourselves is unstoppable, our journey, friendship and bond unbreakable, and together we hope to establish ourselves in the art world both locally and abroad.
